Steel Chicks offers a structured work experience program to introduce young women in years 10, 11 and 12 to steel and construction careers through host employers in our network.
What it offers
The program offers participants exposure to careers across the steel industry—including manufacturing, construction, logistics, and project coordination—with roles across:
- Engineering
- Trades
- Procurement
- Site operations
- Production

Program Structure
Duration
One-week structured work experience placement (9am–3pm, Monday–Friday) for female students in years 10, 11, and 12
Delivery
On-site workplace learning with host organisations across the steel industry
Work Placement
Steel Chicks coordinates placement with a matched host employer and works together with them on a learning plan
Ongoing Support
Steel Chicks coordinates guided mentoring, supervision, and check-ins throughout the placement
Industry Connection
Students gain exposure to steel industry workplaces, female role models, and career pathways through the Steel Chicks network
Benefits for students
Young women interested in trades and STEM gain first-hand exposure to the steel and construction industry supported by female mentors. With structured shadowing and guided activities, they build confidence to explore different roles, workplaces and career pathways.
